With the arrival of the heat, in some places, there may be a large number of wasps, bumblebees, mosquitoes and scissors, insects that can annoy and make the green space difficult to use. Here are some useful tips to ward off annoying insects using natural systems such as specific traps.
Bees and wasps
The most common domestic bees play an important role in the pollination of plants and produce honey. They are recognizable by the more “squat” body shape and covered with down, with contrasting colors much more subtle. It is better not to disturb the bees that frequent the garden or land on the table and walk along the edge of the glass: they will leave alone. Instead, avoid walking barefoot on the lawn if you are in bloom: stepping on a bee can be very painful. The sting has a serrated edge and once stuck in the victim’s body it can no longer be removed, it tears off the animal’s body and decrees its death.
The wasp, instead, is characterized by a long and slender body of a very evident black and yellow color. There are two species of wasps, very common annoying insects: the common wasp (Vespula vulgaris) and the German wasp (Vespula germanica) or earth wasp. Also belonging to the wasp family are bumblebees (Vespa cabro) or European hornet, a large predator of bees and also feared by man because of its large size.
To limit the presence of wasps and bumblebees, it is first of all essential to prevent them from approaching. Avoid leaving around sugary drinks, fruit residues, peelings, but also other food residues such as meat or fish (these annoying insects, unlike bees, also eat meat).
If there are many wasps in the garden, it is likely that there is a honeycomb in the vicinity: wasps can also form colonies of a certain importance but not very visible because they are hidden in a ravine in the rock, or in the cavity of an old dry wall. The colonies of earth wasps build the nest in the ground, where it is not visible: if trampled on, even mistakenly, it is preferable to leave without struggling, otherwise the reaction of the colony is immediate and … painful.
These pesky insects sting humans when threatened. If they are harassed or crushed they release pheromones (volatile substances that are used to communicate with individuals of the same species), an alarm signal that attracts other individuals ready to attack.
The important thing is not to panic by waving your arms to keep the animals away or worse than killing them: doing so helps to make them nervous.
To eliminate them, do not use insecticides: besides being toxic and dangerous for human health, they are also dangerous for the environment and pets. Insecticides are not selective and are responsible for the death of bees and other pollinating insects that are causing their extinction.
It is better to stay away from insects and build different traps.
How to eliminate wasps
To build a trap to catch wasps you need a 1.5 litre plastic bottle, tape, cooking oil, fruit juice or a solution of water and sugar and a string.
Hornets are annoying insects too. To fight the bumblebees use the same trap but put 300-400 cl of beer inside, or a mixture of water (100 g), sugar (100 g) and vinegar (20g).
Also to fight mosquitoes can be used the same traps, what changes is the content and the way of preparation. Dissolve a cup of sugar in a cup of hot water, add a sachet of brewer’s yeast powder, pour the mixture into the bottle, together with a cup of water at room temperature; cover well with transparent film and let it rest in a warm and humid place for at least a week; put it all into the trap and hang it where there are many mosquitoes.
How to keep spiders away
Spiders can be removed with simple natural nebulisations, it is in fact inadvisable to eliminate them because they perform very useful actions for the ecosystem. Get a nebulizer, liquid dish detergent and essential oil to choose from lemon, lemongrass, grapefruit, lavender or tea tree. Fill the nebulizer with water, add a few drops of liquid dish soap and essential oil of your choice from those mentioned above, although it seems to work better with lemon. Spray generously near the cobwebs, near the cracks most frequented by spiders. It is recommended to spray with a certain regularity, to keep the smell strong. To discourage their presence, check that there are no cracks through which they can pass or install mosquito nets on the windows.
Forficula auricularia, commonly called scissors, is a very common omnivorous insect. The damages caused to the vegetation are only occasional and generally, even in the garden, have little economic importance. The appearance of the scissors is threatening: at the back end they have a pair of pincers (cerci) that are often confused with the poisonous spines of scorpions but are completely harmless, it is a gripping organ essential for reproduction.
To remove the scissors from the house it will be enough to remove plant debris and make the environment drier. In this way the scissors will seek a more ideal habitat in which to live. When these insects are found in the garden (especially in greenhouses), it is advisable to remove them only if there is a real risk of infestation.
Among the natural remedies to eliminate these insects there are “do-it-yourself” traps. Just before sunset, place finely rolled newspaper sheets in the garden where the forficule will nest. In the morning, throw away the trap containing the captured scissors. To make the trap more effective, moisten the newspaper with a few drops of beer.
